Reliable innovation methodology – is it possible?

To encourage the creativity, many attempts were made and many tools were created such as brainstorming. Steve Jobs recommended the use of psychoactive substances. However, the current state of knowledge about the human brain and psyche does not foresee the creation of methods that give good and reproducible results on demand. Therefore, observation and control of the objective elements of the process, such as needs, problems associated with them and their solutions, may be an alternative way of controlling the subjective process of creative thinking.

In 1988 American engineer and consultant Greg Yezersky created a set of methodologies based on such approach. Not only did he perform an analysis of multiple systems (markets, products, services) to confirm his hypothesis, but also he checked their effectiveness during his 25-year practice – his methods were applied successfully by the leaders of technology market such as the American organization NASA, Lockheed Martin, Ford, Black&Decker, Jonhson&Johnson and many others from the Fortune 500 list. GTI (General Theory of Innovation) was the basis for university innovation programmes (University of Michigan) and was lectured during trainings and seminars all over the world.
GTI consists of tools and techniques that enable controlling the process of innovation creation. Thanks to that GTI can be taught and gives repetitive results. The basis of GTI is an analytical approach with the emphasis on the relevant problems identification. As even a perfect solution does not bring any value if it does not correspond to customers’ needs. While an imperfect solution that hits the customer’s need and identifies a high value problem, brings enormous profits and leads to growth.
Thanks to GTI, what for some is a result of intuition or a work of chance, for GTI consultant it is a result of methodical analysis.
An ideal example of the fresh approach provided by GTI is presented by a tooth paste producer. There were cases of some empty boxes without tooth paste, Brand owner threatened to change the supplier if the quality did not improve. The producer decided to hire Six Sigma consultants from the outside of the company to help to solve the problem with empty boxes. The project consisted of standard phases: budget acceptance and sponsor appointment, then sending inquiry to the companies and choosing one of them, after six months (and some million dollars later) a great success was reached, on time, in the frame of the budget, gaining required quality, everyone was satisfied. The problem was solved with technologically advance scales that launched a sound and light alarm when the boxes weighted less than required. The controllers stopped the production line and someone was obliged to throw out an empty box and press the button to restart the production line. Some time later the managing director decided to scrutinize the return on investment. The results were shocking! Since installing the scales no empty box left the factory. The company regained the market share as the claims ceased. “Well spent money” said the manager before looking at the second page of the report. It showed that the scales did not catch any defects after three weeks of implementation. They should have caught about 12 daily. The intrigued director went on a production line, to the place where the scales were installed. Just in front of them he saw the desk fan for $ 20, which blew empty, light boxes into the trash. “This” answered one of the workers: “was put here by one of the boys as he was tired of coming continuously to the scale when the buzzer sounds”.
